When in North County do as the North Counties do - go inland!
If you find yourself in Carlsbad or Oceanside and want to ride your bicycle and get in some miles you have two options. You can either go North to Camp Pendleton or go inland. This route takes you inland along a popular cycling route. This route closely mirrors the route used in the Celo Pacific group ride as well as the end of the Swamii's (Long) group ride. You dont need to tell us - we know. There are alot of twists and turns in this one. It is easy to get lost on this ride so bring the cue sheet (below). Getting away from the coast is a bit of a headache but once you are out there you will find yourself riding your bike in Bonsall among rolling hills and long stretches of road where you can open your legs and have at it. This ride brings you back along the popular Oceanside bike path.

This ride starts out pretty much anywhere in Carlsbad. We chose to start the route at the state park but anywhere will do. Just find your way to the Coast and head toward Palomar Airport Rd.
-Right
Palomar Airport Rd, which turns into San Marcos Blvd
-Right on Discovery St and bear to the
left when Discovery St. comes to a “Y” with La Sombra Dr.
- Right on Cravens Rd.
-Left on Twin Oaks Valley Rd.
-Right (east) on E. Braham Dr.
-Left on Woodland Pkwy (under the 78 Fwy)
-Right on El Norte Pkwy.
-Left on Country Club Lane, and
stay on Country Club Lane when it makes a right turn at the entrance to
the Escondido Country Club. East on Country Club Lane (under the I15 Fwy)
-Left on Broadway
-Left on Jesmond Dean
Rd
-Right on Centre City Pkwy (north) which turns
into Champagne Blvd at Deer Springs Rd.
-Continue north on Champagne Blvd,
which turns into Old Highway 395 at Gopher Canyon Rd.
-Left on Camino Del Rey (under I-15)
-Left on Old River Rd.
-Continue on Old
River Road to the bike and pedestrian crossing on the old bridge over the
San Luis Rey River (just past the undercrossing to Hwy 76).
-Left on
Holly Lane to N. River Rd. When you pass by the San Luis Rey equine hospital just realize that this was one of the few equine hospitals in the country that did spine surgery on horses. Recovering a horse with a spinal disorder from general anesthesia is a feat in and of itself. Moreover, who wants to ride a horse with a neurologiz disorder. Nonetheless, one of the surgeons here developed a surgical implement for horse necks that was later developed to be used in human spines. The surgeon was also an accomplished "ride and tie" athlete and competed in 100 mile runs and other athletic endeavors. But we digress.
-Left on N. River Rd. (west) to another left
where N. River Rd. intersects with Vandergrift Blvd.
-left on College Blvd.
-Just across the San Luis Rey River, turn right
on the bike and pedestrian path along the south shore of the river. West
on the bike path to where it travels next to Hwy 76, then use Hwy 76 to go
under I-5 to Coast Hwy.
-The bike path will end in oceanside. Follow the map above to wind your way back to the coast highway and head back to Carlsbad. Nice work!
