Riding the 101 in North County is not only recommended it is an essential San Diego bike route.
Riding your bicycle along the coast in North County San Diego is not options. It is a requirement. You will not be alone. Expect to see dozens if not hundreds of fellow cyclists trolling along on any given weekend day. This is where it happens and the best section of the coast is in North County. This San Diego Bike route is also the flattest part of the coast. With just about no hills, the coast breeze, and any number of small cafes and restaurants to stop off at if you get tired, this bike ride is an essential.
The ride below takes you on a 10 mile round trip (20 mile total) ride from Solana Beach to Carlsbad. If you are looking for something shorter just turn around and head back earlier. If you are looking for something longer go all the way to Oceanside or start out at Del Mar. It is all up to you as the San Diego coast ride is pretty much a straight shot.
The bike ride up the coast is generally out and back. However, we decided to take you on a little jaunt through Encinitas to get closer to the coast and away from the traffic. This part is optional but recommended as the traffic can get a little busy in Encinitas. With that we don't have too much more to say, get out there, ride the coast, see the sights, and dont crash while you are oggling the surfers. Please look where you are going.
