At some point you will get bored with The Great Western Loop and want to expand your horizons a bit. No problem. Start your ride from the trusty Starbucks in Rancho San Diego and head out the 94 to take in Honey Springs Road and Lyons Valley Road in this loop that seems shorter and easier than it really is.

Start out at the Starbucks in Rancho San Diego then head out the 94. Be careful of the rednecks, trucks, hitchikers, glass, and varmints that threaten to waste you as you head out of town. Single file along the 94 is probably a good idea. Take a left up Honey Springs Road. By now the cars should be few and far between so you can climb at your hearts content. Honey Springs is a 30-45 minute climb depending on how much Motivator you chowed before you started out. Honey Springs Road will dump you out at four corners. Go straight at the stop sign and head up Skyline Drive. Up and down you go until  you take your left on Lyons Valley road. Creep through the valley then it is up a few switchbacks. At the top you can stop at the store if you need to. Our experience is that they are somewhat less than fans of men in lycra (not sure about women).  Once you have loaded up on goods and avoided harassment by the staff, take a left and head out toward Japatul Road. At this point you will pretty much be doing The Great Western Loop in reverse as you head home. Much of the rest of this ride is downhill. Take your time and enjoy the scenery because once the hills are done you have a long flat stretch that almost always hassles  you with a strong headwind on the way back to town.
