A store that does not sell Specialized AND has an inventory you can actually ride? That's cool.

Clairemont Mesa boulevard is not a street you will likely be riding on. As such, it is possible that you will never ride by Hi-Tech. That is a shame as it is worth getting to know these guys.  Fortunately, their location is spot on for anyone looking to drive to a bike shop as it is located at the intersection of most the major highways in San Diego. Get in your car and start driving.

Once in the shop you will notice that there is a lack of anything made by Specialized, Trek, or Giant. Hi-Tech is geared to the high end of the industry but do not sell the same mass market frames and clothes you will find at many of the other bike shops. Rather, you will find a refreshing selection of high end road frames such as Ridley, Colnago, and Look; and triathlon frames such as Guru, Quintana Roo, and Jamis. They even carry Lake shoes for crying out loud. The best part is that they actually have an inventory of bikes in many sizes that you can try as you are shopping for a new frame. The inventory does not stop with frames as they also carry a relatively wide seletion of clothing and have a surprising number of bike parts and other accessories as well.

Recently, hi-tech has significantly increased their exposure to the triathlon market. The new "young turks" in the shop seem to be triathloncentric but dont let that scare you away. If you are a roadie, just call ahead and be sure that Hank (owner) is around. He is a San Diego fixture and long time supporter of the San Diego cycling scene. He will be able to help whether you are a Cat 1 or a Cat 5.

Recently we rented a bike from Hi-tech. When it comes to bike rentals in San Diego, these guys may be the ones to beat. The bike was a full on carbon Bianchi road frame in pristine condition. The price was slightly higher than some other places but you get what you pay for. There is nothing worse then renting a bike that is "all tore up" as they say. You wont have to worry about that with Hi-Tech.

If you mention Hi-tech in a crowd, you may get mixed opinions. The main complaint that we hear is that the guys in the shop can sometimes be prickly. We have not ever encountered prickliness and feel that this is a holdover from staff that is no longer in the shop. Don't listen to the street. If you are in the market for a bike, repair, or accessories, get in your car and give Hank and the rest of the crew a call.
