There is clear distinction among San Diego Bike shops. In our view, bike shops fall into one of two categories. The old school bike shops are...well...old school. The new guys are hungry for your business and have built a reputation on service, repeat customer business, and service, service, service.
Being one of the younger bike shops in San Diego, Pulse is most definitely in the category of the new breed of bike shop. Along with Moment Cycles, Pulse has generated a cultish following. More and more we are seeing the legions of Pulse fans riding around in snappy Pulse cycling kits.
Their love of everything Pulse is not surprising. The folks at Pulse know that the old school method of bike sales (e.g. making you feel stupid and bullying you into buying something) won't cut it these days. Take the case of Jay Scott* who is a friend of ours. He recently purchased a bike from Pulse and has not stopped gabbing about how well he was treated. This is a good thing but we fear that Pulse may have gone too far because we cannot get Jay to stop talking about them.
Mike Drury has been in the San Diego bike scene for several years. His experience show and he knows his stuff. Road...tri..whatever. Pulse caters to the high end and middle range of the bike world. Check out their website for products and brands they sell. They have a pretty sharp website. Although we may be reading the tea leaves wrong, it appears that the war for internet supremacy among San Diego bike shops has begun. When the internet sales judgment day comes, we know who we think will be left standing.
The bottom line with all of this is that if you are looking for a new bike, need some advice, or want accessories of all sorts, skip the traffic up on the coast and head South. That is where you will find a shining example of the "new breed" of San Diego bike shop.
