Don't let the name fool you. Indeed, the Slow Step kit and name is a play on a professional cycling team but these guys (for the most part) anything but slow. This club is the brain child of Vincent Fichera who is a well respected and popular San Diego cycling coach. In a nutshell, the Slow Step philosophy is that most riders ride too hard too often and if they would just slow down when they should be going slow, ride harder than they thought they could when going fast, rest up, and eat more, they can make gains they never thought possible. This group is primarily composed of serious amateur riders, racers, and a few pros.
The weekly Slow Step cycling ride is also organized around this philosophy. If you are looking for a club ride where groups of dudes are hammering it out for hours on end, you are looking in the wrong place. If you are looking for a ride where riders ride 2 by 2, where riders put in efforts according to their ability, and if you are looking for drills such as high gear, low hear, surges, and all the rest, you are in the right place. Ride with these guys a few times and you realize that this is a group ride unlike any other. There is a method to this madness so plan on playing by the rules or you will get an earful.
The Sunday ride leaves from Mission Hills at 7:30AM sharp. The course starts out by following the classic Great Western Loop. On the Dehisa climb expect drills such as high torque or spinning intervals. Standing drills await in the next section followed by one leg drills all the way to the turn off on Skyline Drive at which point there is usually a race simulation. The group meets again at the McDonalds off of Fury Lane and then the real fun happens. The Slow Steppers take a detour up Mount Helix on the way home. This little detour will be a crushing blow to the uninitiated when the group starts in with high cadence sprint drills up Helix. At the top of Helix there is a water break and then the group heads back to start their recovery.
