Ride your bike through the abandoned old US 101 in Camp Pendleton in this flat bike ride along the coast.

Camp Pendleton is a ride that every San Diego cyclist will ride at one time or anothe if they want to even pretend to call themselves a cyclist. This is a very scenic ride that is essentially devoid of cars once you are on the base. The other good thing for a cyclist starting out - the ride is esentially flat. Be sure to bring a picture ID. You will get stopped at the entrance to the base and need an ID to get by the guards. You will also need an ID to get out. So, if you are prone to losing your licence on the ride - bring 2.

The ride as depicted in this map clocks in at about 50 miles. That is a long way to go for someone just starting to ride their bike. If you leave from Oceanside you will cut off some miles on the front end. This is also an out and back bike ride so you can just turnaround early to cut off some miles on the back end. This ride turns around at the campground past the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.  It is all up to you just do not get too far into Camp Pendleton and find yourself worn out or stranded. Only ride as many miles as your fitness will allow.

We will start this ride in Carlsbad. However, you can start the ride anywhere along the coast (South of Carlsbad if you want more miles and North of Carlsbad if you want fewer miles). The ride is straightforward and it is tough to get lost on this one. Follow the map and good luck.
